Tucson Roof Repair

DIY: Roofing Lingo

There are many roof related repairs and tasks that a do-it-yourselfer can undertake with confidence, but not many weekend warriors care to take on the task of completely installing an entire new roof themselves. It is to the homeowner’s advantage to sound knowledgeable about the terminology used in roofing, however. It helps when shopping at the local home improvement store and it can allow a roofing professional to be more detailed in explaining what he believes the homeowner needs in a major roofing installation. Here are some key terms.
Roofing

 Drip Edge

In years past, the bottom edge of a home’s roof always consisted of shingles extending slightly beyond the edge of the roof deck. That is still acceptable in many areas to meet local code, but increasing numbers of municipalities now require that new roof installations include a drip edge. A drip edge is a metal strip under the final run of shingles at the edge of the roof deck. Water still can seep under the exposed edge of the shingles, particularly in hard, wind driven rains. If it seeps under shingles on a roof with a drip edge, it meets only a metal surface it cannot harm. The drip edge prevents damage to the wood roof deck.

 Ridge Vents

Virtually everyone knows that attic areas need to be ventilated to remove excessive heat and humidity. Many homeowners achieve ventilation using a wind- and heat-driven turbine, but ridge vents more effectively provide ventilation for larger areas of the attic. As is the case with the drip edge, many municipalities now require that ridge vents be used in all new residential construction. Some homeowners choose to have ridge vents added. Others choose to replace turbine systems only when the roof needs to be replaced. There are many types of ridge vents available. Some have the appearance of a simple ridge cap, but one trend in roofing is to use contrasting colors or materials for the ridge vent.

 Shingle Quality
Tucson Roofing

Roofs streaked with unsightly dark lines of algae became common shortly after shingle manufacturers began replacing asphalt with fiberglass. The fiberglass was not heavy enough to resist lifting in heavy winds, so manufacturers added limestone to provide needed weight. What no one knew at the time was that algae would see that limestone as a food source. Because algae never grew in areas under metal flashing, manufacturers now offer algae-resistant shingles that still contain limestone but also contain algae-inhibiting metal. This type of roofing shingle is more expensive than shingles that are not algae resistant, but it creates a roof that does not develop those unsightly streaks that eventually require cleaning.
These are just a few of the terms that a homeowner should be familiar with when researching roof options. They provide a foundation that allows the homeowner to ask good questions and make the best decisions about his home.

Reasons Your Roof May Be Leaking

In Tucson, many do-it-yourself homeowners will often be perplexed when it comes to more technical things like roof repair – and especially so when those repairs involve roof leaks.

It’s difficult to determine exactly why your roof may be leaking, but there are several possibilities you should consider, most of which require hiring a professional roof contractor like Alan Bradley to administer the repairs.

Possibilities for roof leaks include, but are not limited to, the following:

Shingles or Shakes Missing

With missing/blown-off shingles or shakes your roof could easily obtain water ingress and begin leaking into your home. For a few shakes or shingles, DIY is possible, but most often you’ll want to hire a professional.

Large Object Damage

To state the obvious: large tree limbs or other falling objects can easily puncture a hole into your roofing system. This is often easy to diagnose, but shouldn’t be taken lightly or fixed without the help of a roofing contractor like Alan Bradley.

Moisture Back-up Around Penetrations

This can be more prominent in places with more snowfall, but with the monsoons we get in Tucson precipitation could very well back-up and puddle near vents, chimneys, and other such penetrations.

As such, your roof may begin to leak if the integrity of the roofing around those penetrations fails to uphold the backed-up moisture.

Life Expectancy Expired

A more common occurrence when I comes to roof leaks is simply that the roofing system itself is outdated or expired. If your roof is old and it’s time for a replacement, don’t wait!

Get the job done before any leaks or other such problems begin to eat away at your home!

Poor Installation by Roof Contractor

An unfortunate possibility is also that your previous roof contractor has poorly installed your roofing system and it is leaking due to this disservice.

No sweat! Call Alan Bradley and we’ll consult you to see what your best option is to fix the installation issues.

If your roof has flashing installed around skylights, chimneys, etc., then it’s very possible that storm damage or damage by other service workers could potentially cause leaking in those areas.

Keep in mind also that holes in your flashing are in immediate need of repair.

Most homeowners can handle fixing or preventing minor damages, even to their rooftops, but roof leaks specifically can be rather tricky, and that is exactly why we recommend hiring a contractor instead.

This is simply because a failed roof leak repair can only make things much worse, in that your roof’s integrity may be further compromised without you being aware.

A full roof replacement can be quite expensive, so you wouldn’t want to risk such a costly investment by stubbornly overlooking the potential damage that roof leaks can cause to your home.

Consult with Alan Bradley Roofing of Tucson AZ if your roof is leaking and we’ll be sure to get your roof repaired in no time!

Winter Roof Repairs

Home improvements, like roof repairs and replacements, are often put aside during the colder months of the year.

However, while the winter can make time seem to slow down, that doesn’t necessarily mean you should emulate the same laziness!

Be Proactive

Like with most things – don’t let it go bad before you fix it; this is especially true of roofing repair too. It’s actually during the winter months when your roof can be damaged the most.

What Happens?

Roofing companies from everywhere have all experienced an increase in calls summer after summer as homeowners realize they have leaks and worse.

Don’t be calling after your roof is already in immediate need of repair. The sooner you identify a problem the better and more efficiently it can be resolved.

The Best Way to Avoid Those Calls

Get yourself a quality roof inspection now from a professional roofing company like Alan Bradley of Tucson AZ. It’s smart to catch the onset of severe future damage before it gets out of hand.

It’s easier for our expert team to work around your daytimes hours being that it’s not as hot in the winter, so take advantage of that too!

Tucson Flat Roof Systems – Modified Bitumen

In Tucson flat roof systems aren’t something we would consider a rarity. In fact, they are quite common, but did you know there are several types of systems for flat roofs (some better than others)?

One of the best flat roof systems you can invest in is known as bitumen roofing. Also referred to as a ‘modified’ bitumen (MB) roof, this type of system has many advantages compared to your typical tar and gravel system.

MB roofs are superior in that they better prevent leaks, stand up to UV degradation for longer periods, and best of all they are virtually seamless – thus ensuring you get the most out of the insulation beneath.

A bitumen roof has 5 layers including the insulation at the base and the optional, though highly recommended, roof coating on top. In between, your roof gets the strength and durability of modified base sheets adhered (with waterproof and extra strength bonding material) to synthetic, co-polymer bitumen membranes that come reinforced with polyester (or fiberglass).

The benefits of this type of system are endless. Not only does it withstand the harshest desert conditions that we experience in the Tucson valley, but it also is designed to make maintenance easier by better revealing leak locations and other roof repair issues.

Cover your bitumen roof with an application of the highest quality Elastek® roof coating material and you’ve got yourself a force to be reckoned with. Once a year roof inspection is recommended, but generally you won’t see more than a few problems in your new roof’s extended lifetime.

If you’re looking for something similar, but modified bitumen doesn’t quite interest you, we also do built-up roofing! Built-up roofs are more popular amongst residential homes and bitumen amongst commercial businesses, but we have the tools and the professionals to do either or, regardless of it being a commercial or residential building.

In any event, give us a call at Alan Bradley Roofing Tucson AZ (520-300-9983) and we’d be happy to evaluate your roof and consult with you over the best system for your home or business!

Alan Bradley Roof Repair Tucson AZ

When it comes to roof repair in Tucson AZ, think Alan Bradley. We do everything from replacing shingles, to coating flat roofs, and even fixing leaks and addressing ventilation problems.

Our number one suggestion for any homeowner asking themselves whether or not their roof needs to be repaired is – don’t wait!

Roof repair is never something to wait on. The longer you wait the more costly it becomes. If it gets bad enough you may just want to stretch your roof’s life until it needs to be fully replaced, but even then you’ll be costing yourself extra money.

That’s because the wooden sheathing underneath could become rotted and severely damaged to the point where not only do you need a whole new roof, but you also need it’s structural base completely replaced as well. Avoid costly roof repairs in Tucson AZ by calling Alan Bradley. We assess the problem for you with a free estimate and give you the most optimal solution to save you money not only now, but also in the future.

Often times your best solution may involve more than one roofing service. For example, if we repair roof leaks, we’ll typically suggest an elastomeric coating too, to prevent any further problems with your roof’s already penetrable sealing. You may not realize it, but your roof is something that requires essentially constant maintenance.  As such, we prefer to evaluate your whole roof and not just the problem you’ve identified.

Much of the work we do involves revitalizing flat roofs, as most homes or businesses in Tucson fall under this category. There are plenty of pitched roofs in the area as well, and even some homes that have wooden or tile shingles.

Alan Bradley covers a variety of roofing services in Tucson AZ and our knowledgeable staff is always happy to help you set up an appointment and provide a free and accurate assessment of what your roof does and doesn’t need. Trust us and your home will thank you!
